Pro-ageing: supporting your skin’s natural resilience with biostimulators

Pro-ageing is not about resisting the natural ageing process and trying to turn back time. It’s about supporting your skin so that it remains resilient, healthy and structurally strong for the years ahead.

Rather than masking change, pro-ageing treatments work with your biology to encourage cell renewal, restore vitality and protect your skin for the long term.

It’s an empowering approach to caring for your skin’s health and vitality.

At Hannah London, this philosophy underpins our approach to regenerative aesthetic treatments such as biostimulators. Our objective is to assess the individual needs of your skin and encourage its natural renewal processes, to achieve a healthier, firmer, smoother, more youthful skin.

How our skin naturally ages

To understand how biostimulators work, it’s important to understand what happens to our skin over time.

From our mid-twenties onwards, collagen production begins to decline. In a clinical study, collagen production has been shown to decline by 68% over our lifetime.

Collagen provides skin with structural strength, whilst elastin gives skin its ability to stretch and bounce back into place. Because both diminish as we age, our skin gradually becomes thinner, less elastic and more prone to sagging or laxity.

However, how our faces age is not only about the skin itself.

The face is supported by subcutaneous areas of fat cells, known as fat pads, these are the skin’s internal scaffolding and provide youthful contour and fullness to our features. Over time, these facial fat pads naturally reduce in volume and sag downwards. These structural changes have an aesthetic impact:

  • The upper and mid-face lose fullness causing hollowing around the temples and under-eye area.
  • The cheeks lose volume and fullness causing nasolabial folds.
  • The lower face can look heavier, particularly around the jowls, causing lines around the mouth, such as marionette lines.
  • Wrinkles and crepey texture become more visible with overall skin laxity.

A pro-ageing skincare approach can be a powerful antidote to these structural changes.

Biostimulators: building structural resilience from within

Biostimulators do not simply fill out or replace lost volume, they encourage your skin to regenerate its own supportive framework.

Dr Kaywaan Khan explains the regenerative function of biostimulators in the skin.

One of the key ingredients in biostimulator treatments is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is used in advanced treatments such as Sculptra.

Rather than acting like a traditional dermal filler, designed to plump and smooth the skin to add volume and definition in targeted areas, PLLA works at a cellular level.

PLLA stimulates the fibroblasts within the dermis, these are the cells responsible for collagen production.

When carefully placed within the skin, PLLA triggers a controlled inflammatory response, which encourages the production of new collagen fibres.

This leads to visible improvements in the skin including:

  • Increased skin thickness
  • Improved elasticity
  • Strengthened skin structure
  • Subtle restoration of volume
  • Enhanced skin quality and firmness

The effect of biostimulator treatment is gradual, and augments over a few months after the initial treatment. The rejuvenating results can last up to two years or even longer.

Pro-ageing with biostimulators – the long-term approach to skin health

With pro-ageing treatments, there is a recognition that skin health evolves over time.

By stimulating collagen and gradually reinforcing structural support, biostimulators equip the skin with the resilience it needs to withstand ongoing change.

The aim is healthy, resilient, radiant skin that ages well.
