Ozempic treatment benefits

Ozempic is a prescription medication for type-2 diabetes, obesity and associated medical conditions. Its active ingredient helps to manage blood sugar levels by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone.

Ozempic is well-known for its additional ability to help obese patients achieve significant weight loss.

  • Blood sugar regulation and weight loss

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, mimics the action of incretin, which is a hormone released in the gut following food intake. It helps the body to produce more insulin when needed, and suppresses the amount of glucose produced by the liver.

Ozempic injections also reduce the appetite and slow down the movement of food through the stomach, which leads to weight loss.

  • Exercise and diet

Ozempic is designed to be used in conjunction with a balanced, healthy diet and regular exercise, which are an essential part of achieving sustainable, long-term weight loss.

  • Convenience

Ozempic injections can be self-administered at home, under the expert guidance of your practitioner.

  • Ozempic treatment at Hannah London vs online pharmacies

At Hannah London, we offer clinical weight management support. We know how important it is for you to receive proper assessment of your medical history and BMI in a clinical environment. Through this we can determine the best approach to dosage for your medical needs, and ensure that you are regularly monitored.

We do offer a convenient service where we can send your medication out to you, but you will always be looked after by a clinician who knows you personally.

Our approach is entirely different from online pharmacies, which are not designed to provide you with personalised medical expertise combined with regular monitoring.

The science behind Ozempic injections

In patients with high blood sugar levels, there is increased risk of chronic disease such as Type-2 diabetes. This condition causes health issues associated with the feet, heart, eyes and nerves. Its symptoms include excessive thirst and need to urinate, as well as fatigue.

Ozempic helps to manage blood sugar levels, to help alleviate these risks and symptoms.

The active ingredient in Ozempic is semaglutide. This is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring hormone, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1). GLP-1 is an incretin mimetic, this means that it mimics the effects of natural incretin hormones, which are released in the gut after eating.

Semaglutide helps to regulate blood sugar levels by boosting production of insulin in the pancreas, which then reduces the secretion of glucagon, to regulate blood sugar.

Ozempic treatment also slows the speed that food passes through the digestive system, and suppresses appetite. It is therefore highly effective at achieving significant weight loss in obese patients.

Ozempic vs Mounjaro

Ozempic and Mounjaro are both GLP-1 receptor agonist medications. This means they both mimic the action of the GLP-1 hormone to regulate blood sugar. They also both reduce the speed at which food passes through the digestive system, and suppress appetite.

However, Mounjaro is authorised for use under prescription in the UK for weight loss purposes, whereas Ozempic can only be prescribed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, unless your practitioner recommends its use off-label.

Ozempic vs Wegovy

Like Ozempic, Wegovy is also a brand name for semaglutide, and is administered by the patient once weekly.

Both Ozempic and Wegovy regulate the appetite and increase feelings of fullness, to help reduce food intake and achieve sustainable weight loss.

Ozempic is additionally indicated as a treatment for type-2 diabetes.

  • What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a prescription medication to help manage excessive weight and high blood sugar levels. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which is a synthetic version of the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1).

GLP-1 is an incretin mimetic, which means it mimics the effects of natural incretin hormones released in the gut after eating.

  • How does Ozempic work?

Incretin is the hormone that regulates the amount of insulin that is produced and released into the blood following food consumption.

Semaglutide helps to regulate blood sugar levels by boosting production of insulin in the pancreas when needed, which then reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver.

  • Does Ozempic cause weight loss?

Yes. A well-known additional outcome of Ozempic treatment is significant weight loss.

This is achieved as the medication slows the speed that food passes through the digestive system, and suppresses appetite.

  • Who can take Ozempic?

Ozempic is suitable for patients who have excessive weight and high blood sugar levels. Your practitioner will advise you whether Ozempic is a suitable treatment for you following assessment at your consultation.

NICE recommends – due to their risk from obesity-related health problems at a lower BMI – that people from Black African, African-Caribbean, Asian, South Asian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern backgrounds receive Ozempic at a lower BMI.

  • How is Ozempic taken?

Ozempic is administered once a week by injection into the skin of the upper arm, stomach or thigh at a dose recommended by your practitioner.

The injection should be administered at the same time each week and can be taken with or without food.

  • What are the Ozempic side-effects?

Ozempic can cause side-effects in some patients, but not all.

    Mild side-effects can include:
    - Abdominal pain
    - Constipation or diarrhoea
    - Nausea or vomiting
    - Dizziness
    - Headache
    - Fatigue
    - Flatulence
    - Soreness at injection site

Any side-effects are usually temporary and can be easily managed. Your practitioner will give you guidance on how to manage them. Should your side-effects continue, please speak to your practitioner.

In rare cases, Ozempic can have more severe side-effects such as:
    - Pancreatitis
    - Hypoglycemia
    - Kidney problems
    - Allergic reaction
    - Gallbladder disease, gallstone or cholecystitis

Ozempic can also cause changes in your facial appearance because of the rapid weight loss it can stimulate. Your face may become thinner and seem hollower.

  • Can I drink (alcohol) with Ozempic?

While there is no specific known risk in combining Ozempic and alcohol, it is recommended to limit or avoid alcohol consumption while taking Ozempic injections.

Alcohol can affect blood sugar levels, potentially making Ozempic less effective.

  • Is Ozempic safe?

Ozempic is considered safe for use to treattype-2 diabetes, obesity and associated medical conditions under the instruction of your medical practitioner.

  • How long does Ozempic take to work?

Many people notice that their blood sugar levels are lower within the first week of using Ozempic but it can take eight weeks or more to see the full effects, including noticeable weight loss.

At Hannah London, we closely monitor our patients and offer regular motivational consultations to help you at every step of the way.

We also provide nutritional guidance and support, and can refer you to our in-house expert nutritionist if required.

Through clinical weight management support, we have helped patients lose between 40 and 50 kilograms in weight through our personalised approach to their weight loss journey.
