Treatment Explained

Lower face rejuvenation with dermal fillers

As we age and the production of collagen and elastin naturally diminishes in our skin, we can start to see the effects of skin laxity. Line, wrinkles and folds can form, skin loses volume and facial features can lack definition.

Dermal fillers restore youthful fullness to the skin. They can be carefully targeted to fill out lines and folds, to contour and restore lost definition in the lower face, lips and jawline. Dermal fillers are also deeply hydrating, so they make the skin feel plump and soft.

At our Harley Street and Colindale, London clinics, we offer lower face rejuvenation with dermal fillers.

You will experience your treatment at one of our luxurious, award-winning London aesthetic clinics, led by Dr Kaywaan Khan.

Lower face rejuvenation with dermal fillers benefits

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)

The medical term for smile lines is ‘nasolabial folds’. These creases run from each side of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. They appear when we smile or laugh. Over time, as our skin suppleness decreases, these lines or folds can become deeper and visually ageing.

Dermal fillers effectively plump out these lines or folds, to restore youthful fullness to this part of the face. They also deeply hydrate the skin.

  • Marionette lines

These wrinkles extend from each corner of the mouth down the chin – they are so called as they bear a resemblance to the joined mouth of a Marionette puppet.

Marionette lines are caused by skin laxity as we age, which can cause a downward sag and encourage lines to form.

Dermal fillers fill these lines and combat skin laxity by restoring volume in the lower face.

  • Oral commissure lines (downturned mouth)

Oral commissure is the medical name for downturned lines at the corners of the mouth. They are a very common side-effect of the ageing process.

As skin loses its youthful structure, the downward sag can draw the corners of the mouth down, causing an unwanted facial expression.

Dermal fillers gently fill the oral commissure lines to disguise them. Lip fillers are often used in combination, to restore youthful volume to the lips and enhance the overall rejuvenating effect.

  • Lip rejuvenation

Full lips are associated with youth. As we age, volume in the lips diminishes.

In addition, perioral lines can form and become deeper. These are fine lines around the edge of the mouth, which are usually associated with pursing the lips.

Dermal fillers gently plump out perioral lines to give a smoother, more youthful vermillion border (or lip line).

Lip fillers can be used in addition, to plump the lips, and deeply hydrate them to leave them soft and smooth.

  • Chin and jawline contouring

The natural ageing process causes lack of definition in the jawline.

Skin laxity caused by reduced production of collagen creates jowling, and bone loss through a process called resorption exacerbates the weakened jaw coutour.

Dermal fillers are very effective at supporting bone structure at the jawline to prevent jowling of the skin and subtly recontour the lower face, giving a more defined, youthful profile.

  • Non-surgical treatment with no downtime

Dermal fillers offer a gentle, effective, non-surgical solution to lower face rejuvenation.

You can go on with your life as normal, with no downtime.

The science behind dermal fillers
for lower face rejuvenation

Dermal fillers are rich in hyaluronic acid. This naturally occurring substance in the body is responsible for maintaining moisture levels in the skin.

As we age, production of hyaluronic acid diminishes, which causes skin laxity, and lines, wrinkles and folds to form.

The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers is gel-like in texture, so when injected in targeted areas of the skin it restores volume and has a lifting, contouring effect on facial features.

The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers is also deeply hydrating. It acts as a magnet for moisture, so your skin feels and appears hydrated, healthy and plump.

  • What is lower face rejuvenation with dermal fillers?

The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers is a gel-like substance that restores volume in the skin and has a lifting, contouring effect on lower facial features.

Dermal fillers can be used to fill lines and folds, add youthful fullness to lift the skin, and to recontour and add definition.

Dermal fillers also deeply hydrate the skin to give a plump and healthy appearance.

  • Is treatment with dermal fillers safe?

Dermal fillers are usually safe and effective. There can be some risks as with any skin injectables. However, when dermal fillers are administered by a trained medical professional, risks are minimised. Incorrect filler injection can be reversed with a treatment to dissolve the filler.

The greatest risk of having filler treatment with an inexperienced practitioner is incorrect injection of the filler. If the filler enters a blood vessel, blood supply can be blocked to that part of the face.

  • Does dermal filler treatment for lower face rejuvenation hurt?

There may be slight discomfort during treatment, but this is minimised by the application of a topical anaesthetic cream beforehand.

  • What are the pre-treatment requirements and advice?

You will have a pre-treatment health check with us to ensure your suitability for treatment with dermal fillers.

Please inform of us of any significant health problems or neuromuscular conditions you may have.

Dermal fillers may be unsuitable for you if you are taking certain medication.

Prior to your treatment taking place, to reduce any risk of infection, the treatment area should be hair and make-up free. Therefore, we advise that you should shave and remove any make-up before arriving at your appointment.

You may wish to take paracetamol one hour prior to arrival to minimise discomfort during the procedure. When you arrive at our clinic we may apply a numbing cream which can take up to 30 minutes to take effect.

Smoking or alcohol may affect the healing process. Therefore, these are best avoided prior to and at least one week after the treatment.

  • What are the side effects of treatment with dermal fillers?

Most patients will experience some tenderness and swelling around the injection sites following their filler treatment. This should resolve within the first 24 hours, but it may continue for up to a week.

After this, you may notice some slight redness over a few days following treatment, whilst the skin is healing.

Any bruising that occurs can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. We recommend applying aloe vera gel/arnica ointment and cold packs to speed up recovery.

  • What aftercare is required?

Your practitioner will give you full information about any aftercare requirements following your treatment with fillers.

You should avoid touching the treatment area until 6 hours after the treatment. After this period, the area can be gently washed with soap and water and light make-up can be applied.

Whilst the initial swelling and redness are healing, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (such as a solarium or sunbathing) or extreme cold.

For the first 4 hours following treatment, you should avoid bending or lying excessively. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours.

Download our dermal filler pre-treatment and aftercare leaflet for further information.

  • How long do dermal fillers for lower face rejuvenation last?

Dermal Fillers last between 6-18 months.

After about six months, your body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid fillers. So, you have the option to get touch-ups once or twice a year to maintain the benefits.
