Treatment Explained

What is massage?

Massage is a treatment to enhance mental and physical health and is frequently used for pain relief, to improve blood circulation and also to relieve stress.

During a massage, your therapist will work your muscles and soft tissue to relieve tension and any build up of fluids. This is done by rubbing, stroking or applying pressure to the skin in the relevant areas of the body.

At Hannah London, we offer massage treatments with our skilled therapists in a luxurious and soothing setting.

Types of massage

  • Foot massage/reflexology

A therapeutic massage that uses sustained pressure on specific reflex points, instead of the broad strokes used in a classic massage. Reflexology uses the idea that parts of the foot are linked with parts of the body, therefore massaging the feet can bring benefits for the whole body.
    Duration: approx. 30 minutes.

  • Invigorating scalp massage

Using massage techniques to stimulate the scalp and improve blood flow, this promotes the ideal nourishing environment for healthy hair, helping to maximise thick hair growth and minimise hair loss.
Our scalp massage includes a full head and neck massage.
    Duration: approx. 30 minutes.

  • Neck, back and shoulder massage

Our neck, back and shoulder massage will leave you with a feeling of relaxation, contentedness and relief from pain, like headaches and back pain, and also relief from stress and tension. You will enjoy the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good hormones.
    Duration: approx. 30 minutes.

  • Indian head massage

A relaxing holistic treatment that uses acupressure massage on the head, face, neck and shoulders. It aims to rebalance your body's energies and you’ll leave our clinic feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
    Duration: approx. 30 minutes.

  • Balinese massage (deep tissue)

This massage originates from Bali, Indonesia, and is a holistic treatment that combines gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology and aromatherapy to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and "qi"(energy) around your body.
This treatment uses long sweeping movements and aromatherapy oils to ease muscular tension and calm your mind.
    Duration: approx. 60 minutes.

  • Pregnancy ritual massage

A massage specially designed for women who are twelve or more weeks pregnant. It consists of a special neck, scalp and full back massage that can help an expectant mother by relieving joint pressure and pain, and giving her some much needed ‘me-time’.
    Duration: approx. 60 minutes.

  • Lymphatic drainage massage

A gentle massage to naturally assist the body with drainage of the lymph nodes. Including arms, legs, ankles and other parts of your body, this massage reduces reduce swelling that’s due to a build-up of lymph fluid. It also helps to reduce stress and boost the immune system.
    Duration: approx. 60 minutes.

The science behind
massage therapy

Massage has been practised for thousands of years, originating in India as part of Ayurvedic medicine. It is now used in many forms to support health and wellbeing including for pain management, sports massage for muscle recovery, and using massage to improve anxiety and even depression. Exactly how massage affects our bodies at a cellular level is not yet well known, but research from 2012 showed that massage reduces the inflammation that occurs after exercise, which may also explain how it helps to reduce pain.

  • What areas of the body can massage be used on?

Massage can be used on all areas of the body, from your scalp right down to your feet. At Hannah London we offer Indian head massage, scalp massage, neck, back and shoulder massage and foot massage. We also offer full body massages. If there’s a particular area of your body you’re concerned about please let your therapist know as they will be happy to advise you on what will be best.

  • What are the benefits of massage?

Research is now starting to demonstrate what we have known for thousands of years: that massage has many benefits for the body, leaving us feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Massage has been shown to:
    - Reduce pain
    - Relieve anxiety and depression
    - Reduce swelling and build up of fluids
    - Support improved immune system functioning
    - Promote tissue and muscle recovery after exercise/training.
Massage is also a wonderful way to take some ‘me-time’ in a busy life to rest and recharge.

  • Is it okay to ask for more or less pressure during a massage?

Yes, absolutely. At Hannah London, our therapists pride themselves on ensuring you are comfortable and your massage will benefit your recovery and wellbeing as much as possible. They will ask you how you are finding the massage, and of course please do speak up if you have any questions.

  • Will I need to undress for a massage?

Depending on which areas of the body will be massaged, you may need to undress so those areas can be effectively massaged. Your therapist will let you know what clothes you need to remove and will provide a towel. If you have any anxiety about undressing for your massage, please speak to your therapist when you make your appointment so they can reassure you and explain the process.

  • Does getting a massage hurt?

Massage may involve some discomfort, especially for a deeper tissue massage. However, this discomfort should not reach a level that you are unhappy with. Your trained therapist will check-in with you about your comfort and any discomfort and do speak up if you experience any sensations that trouble you.

  • Is massage treatment ever dangerous?

There are some situations where a particular massage treatment may not be appropriate for you and your body. Our trained massage therapists will always discuss your overall health and wellbeing before the treatment and ensure you get the right treatment for you.

  • How much does massage treatment cost?

This depends on what kind of massage you would like and how long the massage lasts for.
Please see above for our price list
