Why More Men Are Getting Botox (and What You Need to Know)

In recent years, more men have been turning to aesthetic procedures not just for vanity but as part of overall self-care. Many find that these treatments can boost confidence and even support career longevity. With hashtags like #Brotox gaining traction on social media and a noticeable uptick in male clientele at our clinics, it’s clear that the stigma around cosmetic treatments for men is steadily fading for the better. From wrinkle-reducing injectables to hair restoration, the modern man is embracing non-surgical solutions to look and feel his best. Dr. Kaywaan Khan, Advanced Aesthetics Practitioner and Private GP at Harley Street’s Hannah London Clinic, explores popular treatments and the real reasons for the rising demand.

Have you seen a rise in men requesting cosmetic procedures like Botox in the last few years?

Social media platforms have embraced the trend, with over 5,000 hashtags on Instagram and TikTok on ‘Brotox’ and counting. This highlights a broader shift in the way men approach self-care and appearance. However, overuse or incorrect administration can lead to a ‘frozen’ look or imbalance in facial expressions. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of botox treatments for men increased by 27% over the past decade, reflecting a shift in societal attitudes. For men, the most commonly treated areas include the forehead, frown lines (between the eyebrows), and crow’s feet around the eyes. “Functional reasons” became “functional concerns”. As well as this, many opt for toxin treatments, such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Men who are unsure should schedule a consultation with an experienced aesthetic practitioner to discuss their goals and the results they hope to achieve.

What are the most popular procedures for men?

Botox is a non-surgical procedure that requires no downtime and a popular choice for men who want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a small amount of botulinum toxin into the facial muscles. Botox is temporary, results can last four to six months on average. In most cases, Botox treatments take less than an hour to complete and have no real downtime. Some bruising and swelling around the injection site is normal, but it typically resolves quickly.

Dermal fillers are another popular option. These fillers are injected into the skin to add volume and fullness. They can be used to plump up the lips, cheeks, and under-eye area. Also, hair transplants are becoming increasingly popular among men who are experiencing hair loss. This surgical procedure involves transplanting hair follicles from one part of the head to another.

Why do you think cosmetic procedures have become more popular for men?

The rise of social media has made people more conscious of their appearance. Men are more aware of how they look in photos and videos and are turning to Botox to improve their appearance. The increasing complexity and intelligence of filters which can change the shape of your face—even down to your nose and lips as well as skin quality—is also driving demand. 62% of patients found their practitioner on social media and chose them because they were offering cheap deals that were promoted using celebrity pictures.

As the stigma of cosmetic treatments continues to diminish, men are more open to and interested in Botox than ever before. Advancements in cosmetic technology have led to less invasive and more effective procedures, and the influence of celebrities and social media has normalised these treatments and made them more mainstream.

What reasons do men tend to give for wanting work done?

Cosmetic treatments often address concerns like wrinkles, tired-looking eyes, or hair loss, which can significantly improve self-esteem and make men feel more comfortable in social and professional settings. Men increasingly seek treatments to combat visible signs of ageing, such as sagging skin, frown lines, or thinning hair, looking for a refreshed and natural look. This is particularly beneficial if they are looking to maintain confidence in their relationships, especially as they experience physical changes. The reasons include addressing the signs of ageing, boosting self-confidence, and projecting a more professional image.

Additionally, societal pressure to maintain a youthful appearance plays a huge role. As the population ages, more men are seeking ways to combat the effects of time. Don’t cut corners—find a reputable and trustworthy practitioner who has the expertise to help you get the most effective treatments to suit your budget.
